A Guide to Birdwatching in the Carpathians: What You Can See from Our Chalet in Iacobeni, Suceava, Romania

Bird watch From Our Deck

Hey there, nature enthusiasts! 🌿🦉

If you’re anything like me, you know that the Carpathians offer more than just hiking and winter activities. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in for a good mountain climb, but today, I’m inviting you to gaze up—way up!—because the Carpathian skies are teeming with birds you won’t want to miss.

You do not need to be an expert birdwatcher to appreciate this; I began without knowledge. You only need a reasonable pair of binoculars and a bird guidebook if you want to get fancy. So, gather your equipment and let’s get going!

The Early Risers and Coffee Drinkers

You can start your coffee on the cabin’s veranda. It’s your morning coffee and a front-row seat to the morning bird display. Common Chiffchaffs and European Robins may sing their morning songs around dawn. They serve as the natural alarm clock of the Carpathians.

Midday Pilots

Keep your eyes peeled for the European Honey Buzzard as the day progresses, particularly if you decide to explore the nearby trails. If you’re incredibly fortunate, you might even see a Golden Eagle; these majestic creatures are rare.

Along the river

The river, a haven for water-loving birds, is one of my finest places near the cabin. If you make your way there discreetly, you will likely observe Kingfishers at work. These individuals are an extraordinary shade of blue and can dive into the water with lightning-fast speed to capture their prey. What a fishing authority!

The Evening Shift

As the day draws to a close, the evening shift takes over. I’m referring to owls. You’re in for a treat if you identify a Tawny Owl or an Eurasian Eagle-Owl. Please maintain absolute silence; we do not wish to disrupt their hunt.

The Night Herons

If you can’t get enough, the night offers a chorus of sounds from species such as the Nightjar and perhaps a hoot from a Barn Owl. A nocturnal stroll may be the icing on the cake for your day of birdwatching.

What You’ll Require

Okay, let us discuss weapons. You don’t need the most expensive binoculars on the market, but you also don’t need the cheapest ones. A pair of mid-range shoes suffice for the task. As for the bird guidebook, something like “Birds of Romania” should cover most species you’ll encounter here.

The Carpathian Mountains and their nature sanctuaries are a paradise for lovers of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and wildflowers. Even if you’ve never visited this corner of Romania, our guide to birdwatching in Suceava County will bring you up to speed on the region’s more than a thousand bird species. Consider it the ideal introduction to a beautiful area and all the wonders the Carpathians offer!

Did you know that the south of Romania is home to over 380 bird species? Numerous species of birds inhabit a breathtaking variety of habitat types, including desolate forests, swamps, and lakes. Here, in the southern region of Romania, there is a magnificent network of natural and protected areas, which makes birdwatching an immensely diverse activity. And it’s highly accessible as well if you’re willing to walk on uneven terrain and travel in vans over extended distances.

Try birdwatching the next time you search online for things to do in the Carpathians. It’s more active and engaging! You may discover the Carpathians as you’ve never seen them before.
